Washington becomes a STEM school with the addition of Engineering!

Third graders and light interaction.
With the help of a teacher grant from the Pasadena Educational Foundation, Washington Elementary students will now have an engineering component during their science lab experiences. Much of the supplemental curriculum comes form the renowned Museum of Science in Boston. Their engineering and technology units are classroom-tested and research-based. For more information on these units, please click here.
Jackson Teachers Visit Washington's Science Lab!
Jackson principal Rita Exposito recently added a dedicated science lab to Jackson Elementary school. A parent volunteer generously donated her time in organizing all of the lab materials and offered to set up each lab before the classes visit. Ms. Exposito faciliated observation time for her fourth and fifth grade science teachers to visit Washington Elementary to get some ideas on how to run their own lab. They spent time with Washington fourth and fifth graders during their lab investigations and collaborated on science topics with Washington's science coach (see photos below).
Welcome Back, Student Scientists and Science Supporters!
We have a fantastic year ahead of us with lots of NEW science investigations planned, thanks in part to all of those generous donors who gave us much anticipated supplies for our science lab. Again, most of these donations came through www.donorschoose,org, a site in which teachers request funding, write an essay, and wait for the donors to decide if their project is one they would like to support. Washington's Science department has received funding for six projects thus far, three of which will be new additions to the science lab this year. Many of these projects were partially funded by matching grants from corporations and foundations such as California Community Foundation and Merck and Co. To spread the word and read more about these opportunities, please visit the web site above.
Washington Adds a New Donations Page!
We have included a donations page as part of our science web site. Our program could not possibly be the best elementary science lab in PUSD without support from generous donors and our grant writing staff. If you or someone you know is interested in donating to our school, please be sure and visit this page (see "Donations" tab above). Thank you!
Congratulations Washington 4th and 5th graders!
Through www.donorschoose.org, the Washington Elementary science fair participants can now digitally record their observations for their experiments. We put in a request for a photo printer so that students can take digital pictures and download and print them for display on their science fair project boards. The title of our fund request was "Capturing Data Digitally" and we are fully funded! HP generously offered to match 50% of the funds raised and as of February 10th it was funded. See the web site listed above for more information and thank you to all of our generous donors!
Congratulations, Washington Elementary Science Department!
Washington staff applied for and received funds to supplement their Earth Science curriculum through a donation site for educators called Donors Choose. The school received a groundwater demonstration kit, a water cycle kit, and a density tub. All items will help support fifth grade students' understanding about the topics of water conservation, ocean currents, and the water cycle. For more information on this funding opportunity, please view www.donorschoose.org
Science the Washington Accelerated Way
Washington Accelerated Elementary School's unique science program is back for its 4th year! This year, students in grades K-5 will rotate through the science lab on a monthly, bi-monthly, or weekly basis. All labs give students an opportunity to participate in hands-on, inquiry-based activities, many of which are NASA-themed.
Please check back with us soon for more updates! In the meantime, check out our science investigations section for information about recent science experiments. Also view our photo gallery for pictures of our students doing science as scientists do!
